Multi-Source DC-Link-Less Single-Phase Buck-Boost Inverter with Discontinuous Modulation

This paper builds upon recently proposed original solutions for the implementation of multi-source multi-phase inverters and puts forward a discontinuous modulation strategy for single-phase implementation. The proposed approach enables a significant reduction of the switching losses, which can be exploited to maximize either the efficiency or the power density of the inverter, depending on contextual application needs. As a case-study, generation of Japanese residential mains compatible AC supply (110 V RMS <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$/ 50 ~\text{Hz}$</tex>) from two different DC input sources is considered. The inverter is built using 650 V rated GaN transistors and operated with 200 kHz switching frequency. Preliminary results up to 450 W output power confirm high efficiency values, in excess of 96 % peak.
