Comparison of Braking Characteristics of Electropermanent Magnetic Retarders by Finite Element Analysis

We propose an eddy current retarder that is more energy-efficient and smaller than conventional eddy current retarders. The proposed retarder uses a permanent magnet that combines two types of magnets with different coercive force. A comparison of the braking torque of the conventional retarder and the proposed retarder shows that the braking torque of the proposed retarder is reduced due to demagnetization of the magnets. This paper explores the geometry of the proposed retarder to improve the braking torque.

Abstract

We propose an eddy current retarder that is more energy-efficient and smaller than conventional eddy current retarders. The proposed retarder uses a permanent magnet that combines two types of magnets with different coercive force. A comparison of the braking torque of the conventional retarder and the proposed retarder shows that the braking torque of the proposed retarder is reduced due to demagnetization of the magnets. This paper explores the geometry of the proposed retarder to improve the braking torque.
