Bridging the Gap: Addressing the Challenge of Language and Access to Scholarship Produced Outside Iran

Abstract Iran stands as a vibrant hub of intellectual curiosity and academic pursuit, yet its scholars often face significant barriers in accessing scholarship produced beyond its borders due to linguistic constraints. With Persian as the predominant language of scholarship within Iran, the linguistic barrier presents a formidable obstacle, hindering the integration of global academic discourse and impeding the exchange of knowledge. This research explores the root causes and ramifications of limited access to foreign scholarship. It examines the role of language proficiency in academic success and the challenges Iranian scholars encounter in navigating non‐Persian academic materials. Moreover, it investigates the impact of restricted access on research quality, innovation, and the broader academic landscape in Iran. Through a detailed questionnaire distributed to university teachers from top universities and research institutes in Iran, this paper highlights the extent of the language barrier and its repercussions on scholarly communication and knowledge dissemination within Iran. The study finds that while top‐tier scholars do not perceive the language barrier as a significant challenge, they still encounter difficulties, suggesting that a more diverse sample might reveal greater challenges. The research identifies potential strategies and interventions aimed at mitigating these challenges, including language training programs, translation initiatives, and increased international collaboration. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between language, access, and scholarly engagement, shedding light on pathways to bridge the gap and cultivate a more interconnected and equitable academic environment both within and beyond Iran's borders.
