Urgency and Opportunities for Muhammadiyah in the Global Halal Ecosystem: A Strategic Outlook

This study explores how Muhammadiyah can lead in halal certification, research, and innovation. It highlights the challenges of the fragmented halal certification process but also emphasises Muhammadiyah’s resources, such as universities and hospitals, which can enhance halal standards and scientific research. By developing an alternative halal certification body, conducting research, and empowering SMEs, Muhammadiyah can address emerging issues like synthetic meat and blockchain-based certification. This paper adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, using document analysis as its primary method. This study concludes that Muhammadiyah can significantly contribute to the global halal ecosystem. Its educational resources and reformist foundation make it well-positioned to support Indonesia’s goal of becoming a global halal hub. The study recommends that Muhammadiyah focus on three key areas: (1) establishing a reliable halal certification institution, (2) investing in halal research and technology, and (3) empowering SMEs to integrate halal practices into society. These initiatives will reinforce Muhammadiyah’s religious mission and address contemporary global challenges.
