All-Metal Broadband Low-Profile Dual-Frequency Dual Circularly Polarized Aperture-Shared Antenna for Spaceborne Applications

In this letter, an all-metal aperture-shared antenna (ASA) is demonstrated, which has the characteristics of low profile, broadband, dual frequency band, and dual circular polarization. ASA consists of one L-band antenna (LA) unit with four S-band antenna (SA) units surrounding LA unit, and the profile height is only 0.067 λL. The −10 dB impedance and 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of ASA in S band and L band are 2.73 GHz to 3.37 GHz (21.0%) and 1.22 GHz to 1.71 GHz (33.4%), respectively. Considering the temperature fluctuations in the spaceborne application environments, the stability of antenna performance with temperature changes has also been analyzed. To verify the design method, an ASA prototype has been fabricated and measured, and the measured results agree well with the simulated ones, showing a great potential in the field of spaceborne phased arrays.
