Employing Modal Analysis for Computational Speed-up in Linear State-Space Systems

This work proposes a novel method to achieve time savings in discretized simulations for state-space based systems. The method leverages eigenvalue and eigenvector modal transformations to carry out the calculations in the transformed modal domain. The implementation is applied to transient analysis of electrical networks, but the theory is general for linear state-space systems. Significant speedups were realized on a benchmark system, going up to more than eight times compared to traditional analysis for large systems. The effect of computational overheads related to monitoring and discontinuities were discussed and a method was proposed to deal with a network with extensive switching or discontinuities.

Abstract

This work proposes a novel method to achieve time savings in discretized simulations for state-space based systems. The method leverages eigenvalue and eigenvector modal transformations to carry out the calculations in the transformed modal domain. The implementation is applied to transient analysis of electrical networks, but the theory is general for linear state-space systems. Significant speedups were realized on a benchmark system, going up to more than eight times compared to traditional analysis for large systems. The effect of computational overheads related to monitoring and discontinuities were discussed and a method was proposed to deal with a network with extensive switching or discontinuities.
