Novel Parametric Power flow for Approximate Voltage Stability Assessment

This paper develops a novel power flow formulation to find the approximate maximum loading point for voltage stability assessment. The method works by augmenting the Jacobian matrix of the power flow with a parameter equation approximating the derivative of power with respect to voltage at a selected bus. Setting the equation to zero establishes conditions for the maximum loading point. Two different ways of testing the modified formulation on benchmark systems were studied; as a predictor for a modified continuation power flow and as a complete modified power flow. Both methods delivered very good results. The proposed method saves computation time because only a few steps are required to reach a good estimate of the maximum loading point.
