Hydrogen Production and Storage by Utilising Waste Heat from Ships

The increasing logistics needs and energy demands in our world, along with the growing visibility of adverse environmental impacts, are bringing energy efficiency and environmental sustainability to the forefront. The logistics sector continues to grow and evolve due to the need to transport raw materials and products. Maritime transportation is one of the most important components of the logistics sector. However, it faces challenges like high fuel costs and environmental pollution caused by diesel engines. The thermal energy in the exhaust gases emitted from ship stacks offers an economically viable solution for reducing environmental impacts and recycling waste energy through recovery systems. This study conducts technical and economic analysis of converting waste heat energy from the exhaust gases of ships main engines into electrical energy through recovery systems and then using the obtained electrical energy for hydrogen production and storage from seawater via electrolysis.
