A Holistic Approach to Grapevine Cultivation with Precision Viticulture

Modern viticulture faces challenges such as climate change, pests, diseases, soil degradation, and economic pressures, threatening grape quality and yield. Precision Viticulture (PV) offers solutions through advanced technologies like satellite imagery, drones, and ground-based sensors. These tools enable real-time monitoring and site-specific interventions, optimizing water, pest and disease management, and soil health preservation, promoting sustainability and productivity. This study explores various PV technologies that enhance vineyard performance. Precision agriculture applications include smart irrigation, soil sensors, micro-climate forecasting, crop health monitoring, and automated devices for pest monitoring, facilitating early detection of biotic and abiotic stressors and efficient resource management. Harvesting applications employ computer vision and near-infrared spectroscopy for accurate assessment ripeness estimation. Yield prediction combines data-driven models with AI techniques to forecast agricultural output. Emerging autonomous harvesting systems, integrating aerial imaging and ground units, are shaping modern agriculture by reducing labor cost and improving operational efficiency. With the help of these PV technologies, viticulturists can navigate the complexities of modern grape cultivation, ensuring sustainable and resilient vineyard operations.

Abstract

Modern viticulture faces challenges such as climate change, pests, diseases, soil degradation, and economic pressures, threatening grape quality and yield. Precision Viticulture (PV) offers solutions through advanced technologies like satellite imagery, drones, and ground-based sensors. These tools enable real-time monitoring and site-specific interventions, optimizing water, pest and disease management, and soil health preservation, promoting sustainability and productivity. This study explores various PV technologies that enhance vineyard performance. Precision agriculture applications include smart irrigation, soil sensors, micro-climate forecasting, crop health monitoring, and automated devices for pest monitoring, facilitating early detection of biotic and abiotic stressors and efficient resource management. Harvesting applications employ computer vision and near-infrared spectroscopy for accurate assessment ripeness estimation. Yield prediction combines data-driven models with AI techniques to forecast agricultural output. Emerging autonomous harvesting systems, integrating aerial imaging and ground units, are shaping modern agriculture by reducing labor cost and improving operational efficiency. With the help of these PV technologies, viticulturists can navigate the complexities of modern grape cultivation, ensuring sustainable and resilient vineyard operations.
