Chemoreception and Olfactory Navigation in Periplaneta americana
Periplaneta americana, commonly known as the American cockroach, exhibits highly efficient chemoreception and olfactory navigation mechanisms, enabling it to survive in complex and hostile environments. This paper explores the neurophysiological basis, anatomical structures, and behavioral adaptations associated with olfactory perception and chemical communication in P. americana. The integration of antennal and palpal receptors, signal processing in the central nervous system, and behavioral responses to odor gradients are discussed. Understanding these mechanisms contributes to broader knowledge on insect navigation, pest control strategies, and bioinspired robotics. This study also highlights recent advances in electrophysiological recordings and genetic studies that provide deeper insight into olfactory signal transduction in this species.
