Steamboating With Marvin Gaye: A Mixed-Method Pilot Study Using Memory Strategies Within the Framework of Christian Education and Formation
This article affirms the theological imperative of hiding God’s word in the Christian’s heart and using memory strategies to achieve this goal. The first section contributes a unique and appropriate theological, theoretical, and practical pathway forward in using the testing effect and memory palaces in a discipleship context. The pilot study section introduces two memory strategies (testing effect and memory palaces) into a unique and contemporary discipleship context, showing increased retention rates when the sample was exposed to each strategy. The qualitative follow-up section contributes to the ongoing conversation about how implementing strategies might improve the effectiveness and enjoyment of particular areas of discipleship.
