BioVIEW: Automatic Remote Platform for Biodiversity Evaluation Using Low Cost Electronics

Biodiversity monitoring is a critical activity for effective ecological conservation management. Traditional methods often require the continuous movement of experts to monitoring areas and the capture of specimens, which can alter the biodiversity in these environments. This paper introduces the BioVIEW remote monitoring station, an automated electronic system designed specifically for assessing and monitoring insect species populations. Equipped with dual automated cameras, a system of LED lights acting as nocturnal attractors, temperature and humidity sensors, and a solar-powered supply system, this station can be installed in remote locations. It offers 4 G and LoRaWAN communication capabilities for data transmission and remote maintenance. The photo capture methodology is versatile, automatically adjusted at defined intervals to meet specific monitoring needs, and is capable of running machine vision and machine learning algorithms to determine optimal observation times. The BioVIEW station simplifies the tasks of monitoring and surveillance, allowing for customization targeted at specific insect populations without causing environmental disturbances.
