Formulation and evaluation of anti - bacterial flucloxacillin cream

Substances with antibacterial activity either eradicate or inhibit the growth of microorganisms. Although many antibiotics are available, microbial resistance remains a growing concern. Flucloxacillin, a narrow - spectrum beta - lactam antibiotic in the penici llin class, is primarily used to treat skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs), particularly those caused by Staphylococcus aureus. It functions by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, resulting in cell lysis and death. Topical antibacterials are freq uently used for treating skin infections, including acne vulgaris. We developed a topical cream containing flucloxacillin to target infections caused by Streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus. Skin infections may result from trauma, burns, or immune - compr omising conditions such as diabetes or malnutrition. Four formulations (F1 – F4) were prepared using simple trituration. Phytoconstituents like quercetin and beta - sitosterol were analyzed via UV - Vis and FTIR spectroscopy. The cream's physical properties — pH ( 6 – 7), viscosity (960 – 1220 cps), spreadability, and appearance — were evaluated. Antibacterial activity was tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
