Gain insight into House settlement's impact on college athletics
At long last, the settlement in the House case received final approval from U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken. In a 76‐page opinion, Wilken summarized the development of the law in recent cases, the procedural history of this case, the claims and legal issues that were raised, the different settlement classes that were approved, her assessment of the settlement agreement, and her view on the numerous objections that were made. Although there were many objections to the settlement agreement, Wilken denied each of them and meticulously explained her reasoning in her written opinion approving the settlement. Although this column won’t discuss every aspect of the settlement agreement, it will cover certain key portions discussed by Wilken and other critical issues related to this case.
