Students' research competencies in the era of artificial intelligence

Introduction. Modern education requires the training of teachers with established research competencies. Artificial intelligence (AI) is actively involved in the educational process of the university. The purpose of the study is to analyze the correlation of students' attitude to AI with the assessment of their research competencies, including the psychological characteristics of self–organization and subjective control. Research methods. The diagnostic battery consisted of: questionnaire: the practice of using AI in educational activities (10 questions); Barriers and threats of AI for educational activities (10 questions); Pedagogical test (10 questions on AI knowledge, 10 questions on AI literacy); questionnaire "Diagnostics of self-organization features" (Ishkov A.D.); Methodology for studying the level of subjective control (Bazhin E.F., Golinkina E.A., Etkind A.M.). The case study method was used to analyze research competencies. Results. 100% of students use artificial intelligence technologies in the learning process. The concerns are not clearly expressed, but caution is demonstrated in assessing the consequences of using AI (2.43 points out of 5). The level of subjective control among students is below the norm, which indicates an external type. The level of self-organization is generally fixed at the upper limit of the average. Research competencies are formed below average. Correlations were identified and analyzed: the higher the level of self-organization of students, the higher they note the degree of threat of AI to the teaching profession (r = 0.319, p<0.05); the level of self-organization directly correlates with the assessment of research competencies; lower case scores were scored by students with an external type of control. KEYWORDS Conclusion. The study showed the need to increase the level of internality of students, increase their subjectivity, agency in general in the organization and implementation of their own educational trajectory, including when conducting student research. The necessity of educational work is shown; the introduction of specialized courses on the development of competencies for interaction with AI. The tasks of analyzing the inclusion of AI as a didactic tool in the formation of students' research competencies are defined.
