Open Coil Placer – An Innovation
Managing crowding in non-extraction orthodontic cases often involves increasing arch length through the use of nickel-titanium open coil springs. Although these springs offer clinical benefits, their placement can be technically challenging and typically requires a wire tucker. The innovation presented in this paper developed and demonstrated simplified and efficient method for placing open coil spring by modifying a standard bracket placer instrument. The modification involved creating 2*1 mm notches on both the beaks of the bracket placer. The coil spring was then positioned on the arch wire, compressed using modified instrument and the arch wire was ligated before releasing the spring. This technique enabled accurate and single handed placement of the coilsprings without the need for auxillary tools. The modified instrument improved precision, reduced chair-side time and enhanced patient comfort. Overall the modified bracket placer serves as a user-friendly and effective alternative to conventional methods.
