VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND THE DIGITAL DIVIDE IN INDIA
Vocational education is crucial for providing individuals with practical skills that improve employability and contribute to economic growth. The increasing demand for skilled labour in India underscores the importance of vocational training within the education system. The digital divide continues to pose a substantial obstacle to accessing vocational education, especially in rural and economically disadvantaged areas. Insufficient internet access, low levels of digital literacy, and inadequate infrastructure hinder numerous students from accessing online vocational programs and digital learning resources. Government initiatives like SWAYAM, PM e-Vidya, and the Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programme (AEDP) seek to address this gap; however, challenges remain in implementation, faculty training, and resource availability. The disparity in digital access between urban and rural areas exacerbates inequalities, impeding students' ability to acquire essential technical and professional skills. Enhancing internet infrastructure, broadening mobile-based education, and promoting collaboration between public and private sectors are essential strategies to address this divide. This study examines the relationship between vocational education and the digital divide, emphasising existing challenges, relevant policies, and possible solutions. Ensuring equitable digital access to vocational training is essential for empowering India's workforce, promoting economic development, and establishing a more inclusive and future-oriented education system.
