Co-occurrence of Neurofibromatosis Type 1 with Tectal Glioma and Acquired Bilateral Nevus of Ota-like Macules
Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common genetic condition characterized by a variety of clinical characteristics such as skeletal deformities, neurofibromas, Lisch nodules, and café-au-lait macules. This case report details a 22-year-old female patient’s unusual co-occurrence of NF1, tectal glioma, and acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules (ABNOM). The occurrence of ABNOM in this young patient with NF1 is exceptionally uncommon. This case highlights the wider range of pigmentary and neurological manifestations associated with NF1, emphasizing the need for multidisciplinary care to monitor systemic as well as cutaneous problems. The coexistence of NF1 and ABNOM with conjunctival involvement has not been recorded in the literature, suggesting a new relationship that could further broaden the phenotypic understanding of NF1. This instance emphasizes the complexity of NF1 and how a team approach is vital in its appropriate management.
