Effectiveness of Growol Cookies on Levels of IL-3, IL-6, and TNF-α in Sprague Dawley Rats with Metabolic Syndrome Induced by Diabetes Mellitus
Metabolic syndrome is a group of interrelated conditions including central obesity, lipid disorders, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance. The combination of these factors significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Metabolic syndrome is also one of the main risk factors for chronic diseases characterized by increased systemic inflammation. Growol cookies, a local food product rich in fiber, have the potential as a dietary intervention to reduce inflammation. This research contributes to determining the effectiveness of growol cookies on the levels of IL-3, IL-6, and TNF-α in metabolic syndrome rats induced by diabetes mellitus (DM). True-experimental study with a posttest design performed on Sprague Dawley 8-week-old male rats was divided into two groups, namely the DM (K group) and the DM+growol cookies (KK group). Rats were given a high-fat diet (HFD) and then received DM induction with Nicotinamide (NA) and Streptozotocin (STZ). This experiment was carried out for 28 days by giving Growol cookies to the KK group. The Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) was used to show levels of IL-3, IL-6, and TNF-α. Data was analyzed using the Independent Sample T-Test. There were differences in the levels of IL-3, IL-6, and TNF-ɒ between the K group (20,78 pg/mL, 106,57 pg/mL, and 14,07 pg/mL) and the KK group (12,08 pg/mL, 84,06 pg/mL, and 8,29 pg/mL). There is an improvement in the inflammatory response in the group that received Growol cookies compared to the group that didn't receive Growol cookies.
