A novel dual-functional catalyst-stirrer system based on modified galvanized mesh for the Biginelli reaction
This study introduces a novel approach for the Biginelli reaction, utilizing a modified commercial galvanized mesh as a dual-function material that acts both as a catalyst and a magnetic stirrer. The commercial galvanized mesh (CGM), an inexpensive and widely available material, was anodized to activate its inherent metallic components. However, the initial catalytic activity of anodized galvanized mesh (AGM) was insufficient to drive the reaction efficiently. To address this, copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) were deposited onto the AGM (Cu/AGM) surface to make the reaction kinetics faster and significantly enhance its catalytic performance. The Cu/AGM facilitated the efficient synthesis of Dihydropyrimidinones (DHPMs) under mild reaction conditions, while its magnetic properties allowed it to replace conventional stirring equipment. This innovative system simplifies the reaction setup, reduces costs, and aligns with green chemistry principles by minimizing waste and energy consumption. This dual-functional material not only provides a sustainable alternative for multicomponent reactions but also demonstrates the potential for broader applications in organic synthesis and industrial processes. This study can serve as a starting point for the use of other industrial substrates and their application for the synthesis of various organic compounds. • Novel approach for the Biginelli reactions. • Dual Application of Modified Commercial Galvanized Mesh for Biginelli Compound Synthesis. • Anodizing of Commercial Galvanized Mesh enhances yield in Biginelli Compound Synthesis. • Electroless decorating of Cu nanoparticles onto Anodized Galvanized Mesh.
