Crafting Sustainable Interfaces: The Aesthetic Potential of Bio-based eTextiles
In today's digital age, interfaces such as keyboards and screens define our daily interactions.Unfortunately, their mainstream aesthetic based on hard inorganic materials, has contributed to unsustainable consumption and environmental challenges, such as the extensive use of non-renewable resources and an electronic waste crisis. In addition, their design homogeneity limits the sensorial aesthetic experience for users. As an alternative, emerging research in electronic textiles explores the use of renewable, biodegradable materials to create flexible fabric interfaces. This approach challenges traditional aesthetics by introducing crafted organic devices that embrace circular design principles. This work examines the unique aesthetics of a bio-based eTextile interface, focusing on its particular material properties.
