Garfield++ and Geant4-DNA simulation of a compact THGEM-based nanodosimeter

Garfield++, a toolkit for a detailed simulation of particle detectors, was used to assess sensitive volume maps of a compact state-of-the-art single-hole THGEM-based (thick gas electron multiplier) nanodosimeter. The detector is designed for the extraction of positive ions produced by the incident radiation in low-pressure gas. The signal creation mechanism was investigated for two experimental setups. Ionization cluster size distributions produced by alpha particles within the realistically shaped sensitive volumes were calculated using the track structure Monte Carlo code Geant4-DNA. Further, the effect of four different dead time values on the detector performance was studied based on the simulated ion arrival time distributions. The obtained results provide information about necessary adaptations of future compact detector prototypes to measure nanodosimetric quantities and thus enable applications in radiotherapy.
