Phytotoxicity and Health Risk Assessment of Corchorus olitorius L. (Jute) irrigated with Textile Dyes and Effluents from Itoku local dyeing industry in Ogun State, Nigeria

The growing textile industry has led to the release of large amounts of effluents containing synthetic dyes, which can significantly impact environmental health and agriculture. The paper investigates the phytotoxicity of Corchorus olitorius L. (Jute) irrigated with textile dyes and their effluents from Itoku local dyeing industry in Ogun State Nigeria using appropriate standard methods. Data obtained shows that a decline in morphological parameters and pigment content were observed as the dye and effluent concentration increases with the highest observed at 50ppm and 5% concentration of dye and effluent respectively. A study on the heavy metal’s health risk assessment shows that all vegetables were found to pose no potential health risk hazard on both adults and children except for vegetables irrigated with 30% effluent concentration. The daily intake rates of metals (Zinc, Iron and Copper) for adult of average weight of 60kg calculated were not high. The hazard quotient calculated was below 1 except for 30% irrigated vegetables at day 40.
