Asymmetric PM Loss Suppression of Consequent Pole PM Vernier Machine by Iron Pole Shaping Methods
Consequent pole (CP) permanent magnet (PM) vernier machines (PMVMs) have gained considerable academic interest due to their superior torque output capability and efficient PM utilization. However, their application is often limited by substantial losses at high speeds. This paper applies various iron pole shaping methods, including symmetrical and asymmetric iron pole shaping methods, to mitigate asymmetric PM eddy current loss while maintaining the average torque output. The proposed iron shaping methods effectively reduce PM flux leakage and PM loss and enhance efficiency without compromising average torque output. The effectiveness of iron pole shaping methods is further validated on CP PMVMs with various slot/pole number combinations.
