Segmented Stators Offering Improved Thermal Performance and The Potential for Greater Power Density
In this paper we explore the advantages offered by segmenting or modularizing the stator of an electrical machine. We focus on the benefit of easier access for winding, when compared to a non-segmented stator, and how a greater copper fill factor and more ordered coil arrangement offer an improved thermal path. The results suggest that at higher power loading the flat faced topology can operate at lower temperatures than the curved faced topology, thereby allowing a greater electrical load for the same temperature rise: therefore, contributing to an increase in power density for the electrical machine.
