Experimental analysis of negative-sequence currents due to interturn faults in the stator of a DFIG for protection and diagnostic purposes

A model and experimental-based analysis is conducted to evaluate the effects of stator interturn faults in the currents of the DFIG operating under different rotor speeds. The model of the DFIG under stator interturn faults is presented. The study is then conducted using an experimental setup of a 3 kVA DFIG in laboratory, with traditional PI control for speed and dq currents. The stator and rotor currents, as well as the negative-sequence current in dq, are analyzed under healthy and faulty conditions, and it is noted that the negative-sequence current is present during interturn faults. Furthermore, the root locus of the dq negative-sequence current changes according to the phase involved in the fault.
