Implementing electrical steel properties in excess loss modelling of reduced critical rare earth electric traction machines

The loss modelling of electric traction machines strives for improved accuracy to better predict the achievable power level and efficiency. The losses in the ferromagnetic stack constitute of a hysteresis, an eddy current and an excess component. The excess loss is the consequence of domain wall movement during the magnetization processes, and is linked to the resistivity, the structure and the texture of the electrical steel. An experimental measurement combined with a mathematical and material description of this excess loss is deployed to estimate the importance of skin effect. The relevance of adequate material selection thus is quantified.

Abstract

The loss modelling of electric traction machines strives for improved accuracy to better predict the achievable power level and efficiency. The losses in the ferromagnetic stack constitute of a hysteresis, an eddy current and an excess component. The excess loss is the consequence of domain wall movement during the magnetization processes, and is linked to the resistivity, the structure and the texture of the electrical steel. An experimental measurement combined with a mathematical and material description of this excess loss is deployed to estimate the importance of skin effect. The relevance of adequate material selection thus is quantified.
