Performance Evaluation of Single-Pulse-Operated High-Speed Switched Reluctance Machine Towards Multi-Objective Optimization
This paper investigates the performance of a high-speed switched reluctance machine (SRM) in single-pulse mode above its base speed for both motoring and generating modes. The machine’s flux linkage, back-EMF, torque, and radial force characteristics are obtained through experiments and finite element analysis. A look-up table-based dynamic simulation determines the feasible range of turn-on and turn-off angles, constrained by peak current limits. Results show that increasing DC-link voltage reduces the feasible operating range due to a higher current rise rate and also limits average torque production. To ensure efficient and low-noise operation, key performance metrics–phase RMS current, radial force ripple, and torque ripple (for motoring) or DC-link ripple current RMS (for generating)–are analyzed at 100 V and 15,000 rpm. Finally, optimal turn-on and turn-off angles are determined for motoring and generating at torque levels of 0.5 Nm and 1 Nm.
