Electromagnetic Design and Analysis of an Asymmetric Dual Three Phase Slotless 3D Airgap Electric Machine for High Power Density Applications
Asymmetric dual three-phase slotless 3D airgap permanent magnet synchronous machine (ADTP 3D-AGM) that integrates radial and axial topologies in one geometric structure is suitable for applications requiring high power density. The 3D-AGM configuration shares common windings connected to a dual three-phase supply. The 3D-AGM converts the structural and non-torque portions of the motor to torque-producing components to ensure efficient volume utilization and, hence, improves volumetric power density. The dual three-phase windings ensure better torque utilization and provide reliable operation during 3-phase faults. The paper presents a methodology for the electromagnetic design of a 3D-AGM using the superposition principle to predict its torque from radial and axial counterparts. The 3D-AGM displays higher power density than an equivalent radial flux motor along with comparable efficiency.
