Comparative Analysis of Modeling Methods for High-Frequency Phenomena and Simulations Of Bearing Currents in Induction Motors

This paper presents an analysis and comparison of methods for high-frequency representation of induction motors, focusing on common-mode phenomena and inverter-induced bearing currents. The simulation results are compared to measurements, and the accuracy of each motor modeling strategy is evaluated. In addition, a new procedure to compute the motor stray capacitances is proposed, which considers the random-wound winding. The results of this work provide useful guidelines to assess the induction motor bearing currents and to evaluate suitable alternatives for their attenuation, in order to preserve the bearing lifetime and increase the motor availability.

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis and comparison of methods for high-frequency representation of induction motors, focusing on common-mode phenomena and inverter-induced bearing currents. The simulation results are compared to measurements, and the accuracy of each motor modeling strategy is evaluated. In addition, a new procedure to compute the motor stray capacitances is proposed, which considers the random-wound winding. The results of this work provide useful guidelines to assess the induction motor bearing currents and to evaluate suitable alternatives for their attenuation, in order to preserve the bearing lifetime and increase the motor availability.
