Modeling of Moving Rotor Elements for Machines with Speed-Dependent Flux Linkage

The functionality of Variable Flux Machines (VFMs) relies on the principle that the machine’s magnetic properties can be modified during operation through dynamically adjustable rotor flux linkage. This approach increases efficiency by reducing the need for electrically driven field weakening at high speeds. Based on the design of a VFM with movable components, this study investigates the impact of these components on the machine’s behavior. Both analytical and FEA-based approaches were conducted to optimize their geometry. The results of the selected geometries are verified through a measurement setup, and an outlook for the implementation in electric machines is given.

Abstract

The functionality of Variable Flux Machines (VFMs) relies on the principle that the machine’s magnetic properties can be modified during operation through dynamically adjustable rotor flux linkage. This approach increases efficiency by reducing the need for electrically driven field weakening at high speeds. Based on the design of a VFM with movable components, this study investigates the impact of these components on the machine’s behavior. Both analytical and FEA-based approaches were conducted to optimize their geometry. The results of the selected geometries are verified through a measurement setup, and an outlook for the implementation in electric machines is given.
