Recent trends in the application of CFD and ANN on the biohydrogen—A review

The production of hydrogen is not economical and reliable at an industrial scale due to non-viability of the industrial reactors and require tremendous efforts. Application of numerical methods such as computational fluid dynamics and artificial neutral network are introduced in the development of reactors in predicting the production of hydrogen from the stirred bioreactors towards practicality and scale-up. However, these methodologies are at early stage and have minor challeneges, in order to overcome that, various approaches such as applied moving reference frame and k-Epsilon turbulence models were proposed to achieve better results with less uncertainty compared to experimental approach. In this study, the production of biohydrogen from the CSTR and ESGR reactors using CFD approach is reviewed in detail. In addition, the prediction of hydrogen using the neutral scheme by introducing ANN is also discussed elaborately. Further, technical difficulties of the modeling, key limitations and the future endeavors in the numerical approach are summarized. • Biohydrogen production and enhancement options were reviewed. • Computational methods for the optimization is proposed. • Applying moving reference frame and k-Epsilon turbulence models to achieve better results. • Strategies to improve bio-H 2 in continuous systems are discussed.
