A Capacitor Cell with Forced Turn-on

A capacitor cell (120 kJ and 50 kV) is intended for application in a large capacitive energy storage with a stored energy of several megajoules. A double-circuit capacitor cell that consists of “fast” and “slow” discharge circuits is proposed and substantiated. The fast discharge circuit involving a capacitor with a relatively small stored energy and a fast pseudospark discharge current switch provides a given voltage front duration at the load of 100 ns at most. The slow circuit with the main capacitor bank and a triggered vacuum switch can generate a current pulse with an amplitude of up to 500 kA at a specified current front duration of up to 10 μs. The capacitor cell design is described, and the research results of the transient processes during the cell discharge are presented, including those for high frequency oscillations in a 20-m-long cable line, which connects the capacitor cell with the load. The results of testing the capacitor-cell prototype are presented.
