How the Mind Is Affected in Homer and the Sanskrit Epics. Part II: Positive Mental Changes

The article offers a contribution to the psychology and mental language of the Homeric epics. We collect, classify, and examine Homeric expressions describing positively evaluated transformations or states of the mind. For comparative purposes, we conduct an analogous analysis of the Sanskrit epics Mahābhārata and Rāmāyaṇa. On this basis, we discuss the ways of conceptualizing the mind found in the collected material and identify specific features of Homeric psychology. This analysis complements our study of negatively evaluated mental changes in the epics (CP 119 [2024]) and draws conclusions from the material examined in both studies.
