Investigation of the Arc-Extinguishing Performance of Compression Extinguishing Devices Under Icing Conditions
This Overhead transmission lines are susceptible to geographical and environmental influences, frequently facing icing and lightning disasters, which may result in the potential failure of composite ground wires. While grounding measures can address this issue, they tend to increase the line trip rate due to lightning strikes and reduce equipment's lightning resistance capabilities. Therefore, this paper utilizes Compression ArcExtinguishing Device (CAED) as a substitute for composite ground wires to enhance the lightning resistance of the lines. The study analyzes the arc-extinguishing performance of CAED in 10 kV lines under icing conditions through both simulation research and experimental validation. In the simulation section, a two-dimensional geometric model is constructed to compare the breakdown characteristics of the device before and after icing, investigating the dynamic process of the arc from the perspectives of temperature and pressure. The results indicate that CAED can still effectively suppress the development of arcs after icing, preventing the occurrence of reignition. The experimental section confirms that even after icing, the device can prioritize the breakdown discharge of insulator strings. After applying power frequency current, the device remains capable of extinguishing the arc within half a wave cycle, demonstrating its reliability under icing conditions.
