On the Design Features of MUJI

As an independent brand in Japan, MUJI is a representative of contemporary minimalism that integrates Eastern philosophical ideas. Since its establishment, MUJI has been committed to the concept of minimalist design, showcasing the original appearance of objects in visual design, materials, packaging, and other aspects. It removes the possibility of meaningful expressions and symbol reproduction on the surface of objects, emphasizes practicality and functionality, ad-vocates simple shapes, opposes unnecessary decorations, and adheres to the principle of less is more. It has a strong modern design style. Its products have quickly become popular all over the world with the characteristics of minimalism, functional supremacy, material highlighting, and national culture design, bringing infinite inspiration to designers in China or other countries. This article mainly analyzes the design features of MUJI products, so that our designers can make some contributions to the visual design or packaging of localized products in China from the perspective of product function, material, and texture, and from the purpose of design itself.
