Implant-supported Overdenture with Custom Bar and Ball Attachment for Prosthetic Management of an Atrophic Mandible in a Long-term Denture Wearer
Abstract Complete mandibular edentulism presents challenges in prosthetic rehabilitation, particularly with conventional dentures, often leading to complications such as poor retention and reduced patient satisfaction. This case report outlines the successful management of mandibular edentulism using implant-supported overdentures with custom bar and ball attachments. A 65-year-old female patient, a long-time denture wearer for 13 years, presented with loose lower dentures due to significant mandibular alveolar ridge resorption. Two implants were placed in the anterior mandible, followed by the fabrication of a custom bar-splinted overdenture with ball attachments. Implant-supported overdentures using custom bar and ball attachments offer effective solutions for complete mandibular edentulism. This approach enhances retention, stability and patient comfort, significantly improving functional outcomes and aesthetics for patients with compromised alveolar ridges. The case highlights the benefits of implant-supported overdentures in enhancing functionality and aesthetics for patients with compromised mandibular ridges.
