Mainstreaming wasatiyya Islam in the Learning Process: Insights for Islamic Religious Education in the Netherlands

Abstract This study aims to explore the concept of wasatiyya and analyse whether it can be applied in Islamic education in the Netherlands. This study uses a literature research method by collecting data from various sources, including academic journals, books, websites and related publications. Content analysis is used to analyse the data in three stages: data collection, data reduction, and drawing conclusions. The concept of wasatiyya , which promotes tolerance and respect for differences, can provide new insights that, if applied in Islamic education, can strengthen students’ social integration in the secular and pluralistic society of the Netherlands. The data from this study is limited to the literature. It is suggested that future research might use a different approach to obtain more in-depth results by, for example, conducting in-depth interviews with Islamic education stakeholders in the Netherlands.
