Radical Democracy in Basic Ecclesial Communities in the Philippines
Abstract This article will argue that radical democracy can be realized in Basic Ecclesial Communities. These constitute a faith-based movement that gives the church a new way to achieve its mission. Basic Ecclesial Communities not only give an avenue for meeting with Christ, but also empower the people. This aim is made possible since Basic Ecclesial Communities took a strong stance on socio-economic and political issues that affect the people. They have extended their mission through active participation in prayer rallies, protests, and ecological movements. Basic Ecclesial Communities are steadfast in achieving social justice. Insofar as they embrace these features, they are not far from what C. Douglas Lummis envisions in his notion of radical democracy. Lummis explains that radical democracy empowers the people since democracy comes from people and power . As the they empower people through faith-based activities, Basic Ecclesial Communities can enable radical democracy.
