The Effects of Excessive Use and Addiction of Social Media on Sleep Quality in College Students

Objective : This study aimed to identify excessive social media use and addiction in college students and examine its effects on sleep quality. Methods : This study investigated the use of excessive social media, access frequency, social media addiction, and sleep quality through an online survey targeting 116 college students. Independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to verify the differences in sleep quality according to general characteristics. The correlation between general characteristics, excessive use of social media, social media addiction, and sleep quality was analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis, and the effects of general characteristics, excessive use of social media, and social media addiction on sleep quality were analyzed using hierarchical regression analysis. Results : The sleep quality evaluation results by general characteristics showed that the sleep quality was significantly lower in male subjects. Among the sub-areas of social media addiction and excessive use of social media, social media usage time showed a positive correlation with sleep quality, and among the general characteristics, gender showed a negative correlation. The hierarchical regression analysis results showed that among social media addiction and excessive use of social media, the time spent on social media usage time had a significant positive effect on sleep quality, and among the general characteristics, gender had a significant negative effect on sleep quality. Conclusion : This study revealed that the factors affecting college students' sleep quality are social media addiction, gender, and social media usage time among the sub-areas of excessive use. To improve college students' sleep quality, it is necessary to provide an environment where they can establish proper usage habits through preventive education and psychological support and develop programs to prevent social media addiction.
