The concept of sociomaterial design: Theoretical and pragmatic aspects. Part I
Introduction. The growing reflexivity of contemporary society has led to the spread of ideas and principles that have emerged in the practice of design and “design thinking” related to the design and analysis of social processes. Despite the influence of the design sphere on social governance and social reflection, social philosophy today lacks a well-reasoned theory that offers a comprehensive view of this phenomenon. Theoretical analysis. The most famous attempt to systematically understand the phenomenon of design is the concept of four orders of design by R. Buchanan, which distinguishes the design of signs and symbols, the design of material objects, the design of actions (services) and the design of organizations. The disadvantages of this concept are the unjustified separation of the levels of signs and material objects, the omission of the design of human interaction with objects, as well as the lack of analysis of the interrelationships of different levels of design. The original concept of sociomaterial design as an analytical construct is proposed, identifying four interrelated levels of design in social phenomena: material objects and signs, interaction between a person and an inanimate object, interpersonal and group interactions, social institutions. The interrelation of these levels is illustrated by a concrete material example. The key features of sociomaterial design include a conscious effort to transform the status quo in order to shape positive experiences, maintain well-being and prosperity, and preserve stability. Conclusion. Further research of sociomaterial design requires analyzing the mutual conceptual relations of design and narrative in the design of social phenomena.
