Guillain-barre Syndrome: Increasing Prevalence and Public HealthImplications
The detection of over 180 cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in Pune, India, hasraised public concern that food may be the underlying cause. Clinical diagnosis was made throughcerebrospinal fluid analysis and nerve conduction studies, with over 85% of patients experiencingtypical signs of GBS. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing detected Campylobacter jejuni inmore than half of the stool samples from evaluated patients, suggesting a strong association with theoutbreak. This highlights the urgent need to make improvements in sanitation, food and water safety, and public health management. The results prove that environmental and microbial elements contributeto the emergence of new neurological disorders in urban areas.
