Theory, Simulation and Development of a New Type of Magnetic-Controlled Stepless on-Load Voltage Regulating Transformer

Recently, a wide range of new energy sources has become available, providing extensive access to alternative power options for a sustainable future. In response to the challenges posed by traditional tap transformers, including graded voltage regulation, short maintenance intervals, and high maintenance costs, and to support the frequent voltage regulation needs of renewable-integrated power systems, this paper develops a new type of magnetic-controlled stepless on-load voltage regulating transformer (MSOVRT). Firstly, the concept of MSOVRT is proposed by referring to the principle of magnetic amplifier. On this basis, the numerical simulation model of the MSOVRT is developed on the platform of multi-physics simulation software COMSOL. Finally, an experimental model of the MSOVRT is fabricated, and both its design concept and analytical model are experimentally verified. The test results of the prototype show that the MSOVRT achieves a voltage regulation range of approximately 33.6%, with good agreement between experimental and simulation results. The proposed magnetron MSOVRT can effectively realize the function of continuous on-load voltage regulation. This work verifies the feasibility of continuous on-load voltage regulation in transformers using magnetic field control through comprehensive modeling, experimental implementation, and testing, thereby providing a foundation for subsequent research and future deployment of the MSOVRT in practical power grid applications.
