Performance Comparison of RIS-Assisted Transmission Schemes over Fading Wireless Channels
In the last few years, significant research efforts have been made to improve wireless data transmission quality. One of the most promising technologies is reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted transmission schemes, which are capable of intelligently configuring wireless propagation environments by smartly adjusting RIS reflecting elements. However, since different fading channels can significantly impact the effectiveness of RIS, it is crucial to evaluate how RIS performs under various conditions. In this paper, the performance analysis of RIS-assisted wireless communication systems over numerous typical fading wireless channels, e.g., Rayleigh, Rician, Nakagami-<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$m$</tex>, and Weibull, are thoroughly investigated. The closed-form of outage probability, channel capacity, energy efficiency, and average symbol error probability are investigated and derived. The simulation results verified that RIS-assisted transmission schemes can remarkably enhance link quality, data transmission rate, and energy efficiency in comparison with the traditional wireless communication scheme. Moreover, the performance of RIS-assisted data transmission under different number of RIS reflecting elements is compared and demonstrated. The obtained results can be utilized in copious future indoor communication scenarios, such as intelligent library indoor navigation and positioning.
