Demo: V2X-Based Electronic Fee Collection
Electronic Fee Collection (EFC) has become a commonplace payment solution, especially in mobility scenarios with EV chargers, parking lot and highway operators, relying on electronic methods, such as RFID tags, to charge customers. Although adequate in some scenarios, current methods have several drawbacks when applied to Open Road Tolling (ORT). RFID tags are typically coupled with Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) systems to support customers without tags. This increases infrastructure costs and is still an ineffective solution, as it is significantly affected by weather conditions. The increasing adoption of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications presents highway operators with an alternative to ORT challenges. A V2X-based electronic fee collection (EFC) system simplifies infrastructure requirements, and open standards enhance interoperability among various operators. In this context, we present an implementation of a V2X-based EFC system that adheres to SAE and IEEE standards, showcasing its feasibility and alignment with the business requirements set by road operators.
