Archimedean Spiral Antenna Facilitated by Metamaterial for Wideband Applications

Utilization of wideband and ultra-wideband antennas has been on rise. An Archimedean spiral antenna and its directivity performance are presented in this paper. The structure includes a 7 turn, 2 arm center-fed Archimedean spiral radiating antenna. Spiral antennas are well-known in wearable applications as well because of their wideband and circular polarization characteristics. To demonstrate its wearable application and to isolate the antenna from the human body and have unidirectional radiation characteristics, a metamaterial surface was used as a ground plane. A Local Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) study was also conducted to investigate the effects of radiation from the antenna on the human body. This antenna is designed to cover the frequency-band from 2–6 GHz, which includes WiFi, WiMax, and Bluetooth frequencies.
