Solving Eigenmodes in a Radio Frequency Cavity for Particle Accelerators
Particle accelerators are scientific and industrial machines that accelerate charged particles to higher energies from a few keV to potentially tens of TeV, with a broad application from medical radiation to isotope production, to synchrotron light sources and the high energy physics colliders. Radiofrequency (RF) cavity is one essential element for a particle accelerator, providing the longitudinal energy boost and manipulations. Powered by the external RF source, the desired EM fields build up coherently in the cavity and interact with the charged particles passing through. The dominant EM power in an RF cavity usually resides in the discrete eigenmodes. Solving these eigenmodes is a major EM simulation task for designing and analyzing an RF cavity.
