Understanding Social Dynamics on Arcade Racing Game
Racing games are among the most popular genres in the gaming industry, attracting players with their competitive mechanics and engaging multiplayer features. This study analyzes the impact of social dynamics in arcade racing games, focusing on gameplay mechanics, item usage, track design, and vehicle selection in games like Mario Kart. Using the Elemental Tetrad framework, we explore how mechanics, aesthetics, story, and technology contribute to player experience and social interactions. This study employs a comparative analysis of multiple game modes and collects data from the game experience questionnaire to assess player engagement in multiplayer environments. The results indicate that randomized item distribution mechanics and rubber-banding systems significantly affect the balance between casual and competitive players. Dynamic track design and vehicle selection also introduce strategic variations that influence race outcomes. Compared to existing solutions, such as item balancing in other racing games, our findings suggest that Mario Kart offers a stronger balance between luck and skill than its competitors. However, the analysis also identifies key weaknesses, including the lack of item customization for competitive players and the greater social engagement impact in multiplayer mode compared to solo play. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how game design can enhance player interaction in racing games. The findings provide insights for game developers aiming to create more inclusive and balanced multiplayer racing experiences.
