Evaluating Stateful Migration Strategies for MQTT Brokers in Vehicular Edge IoT Networks

In the fast-evolving fields of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), the rapid proliferation of resource-constrained devices necessitates efficient data management and low-latency communication. Resource and service migration plays a vital role in maintaining data storage and computational capacity near users, facilitating the deployment of edge and fog computing environments. This study explores migration strategies specifically designed for MQTT brokers in vehicular networks. First, we develop a theoretical model to estimate the size of an MQTT broker state based on factors such as the number of connected clients and the nature of the traffic served. Then, we propose, implement, and evaluate two MQTT broker migration methods. The resulting findings provide new opportunities for enhancing MQTT state migration in dynamic, resource-limited environments.
