Performance Comparison Among Different Apodization Functions of Fiber Bragg Grating for Dispersion Compensation
Optical fiber communications have been important in developing multiple communications systems over the last 30 years, including mobile and data communications. Dispersion was recorded as one of the challenges that conventional methods could not overcome. Varying the effective refractive index of the fiber core through chirping or apodization has been used for dispersion compensation purposes. This article has enhanced an optical link that carries data with a 10Gbit rate by applying both chirping and apodization to the operating glass fiber. While chirping is fixed to a linear chirping profile, multiple apodization profiles have been tested. The simulation done by Optisystem software proved to be enhanced due to the implementation of apodization. The system was tested for various link lengths and several other parameters. The results showed performance enhancement by examining the Eye Diagram, Q-factor, and Bit Error Rate (BER). Focusing on the maximum link length of 40km, which is the maximum length between the base-station and Base-Band Unit pool in a C-Ran 5G mobile network, can be set with a Q-factor as high as 53 with virtually 0 BER when using Uniform Apodization. It was able to confirm through the eye diagram analysis that the Q-factor and BER of the proposed system with linear chirping and hyperbolic tangent (Tanh) apodization function improved the Q-factor to more than 200 with a nearly zero BER.
